Hunting trophy import bans proposed by the UK may be ineffective and inequitable as conservation policies in multiple social‐ecological contexts

چکیده

The UK government is considering legislation to prohibit the importation of hunting trophies. We examine documented social, ecological, and political outcomes two previous such bans. find that government's proposal shares shortcomings existing bans have (1) failed address, or even amplified, key threats hunted species, (2) imposed costs on citizens other countries, (3) delegitimized Convention International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Trophy import are blunt policy instruments can cause more problems than they solve.

Application of the Anthropogenic Allee Effect Model to Trophy Hunting as a Conservation Tool, CONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Vol 27, 945-951

Trophy hunting can provide economic incentives to conserve wild species, but it can also involve risk when rare species are hunted. The anthropogenic Allee effect (AAE) is a conceptual model that seeks to explain how rarity may spread the seeds of further endangerment. The AAE model has increasingly been invoked in the context of trophy hunting, increasing concerns that such hunting may undermi...

Incentivizing Monitoring and Compliance in Trophy Hunting

Conservation scientists are increasingly focusing on the drivers of human behavior and on the implications of various sources of uncertainty for management decision making. Trophy hunting has been suggested as a conservation tool because it gives economic value to wildlife, but recent examples show that overharvesting is a substantial problem and that data limitations are rife. We use a case st...

Banning Trophy Hunting Will Exacerbate Biodiversity Loss.

International pressure to ban trophy hunting is increasing. However, we argue that trophy hunting can be an important conservation tool, provided it can be done in a controlled manner to benefit biodiversity conservation and local people. Where political and governance structures are adequate, trophy hunting can help address the ongoing loss of species.
